A leading bike insurance firm has advised bikers that when they purchase a vehicle whether it is used or new, they should always take it for a test drive.
It added that when they do take the bike for a test run, it is vital to have adequate bike insurance.
Motorists should never drive without suitable insurance as they risk getting points on their licence or even disqualification.
The insurer said that when choosing the right bike, there are many factors which can affect a decision, including the performance of the vehicle and how comfortable it is.
Taking a test drive helps to identify any problems with the vehicle.
The insurance company encouraged buyers to look at bikes during the daytime, to get a clear view of any damage, scratches or faults. When taking a test drive, they should do so on a dry day to feel how the vehicle handles under day-to-day conditions.
Anthony Aronin, Head of bike insurance at the firm said: "A homeowner would never buy a new house without going to view it first. Likewise, bike enthusiasts should never buy a new or used motorcycle without taking it for a test drive first.
"Even in the thrill of buying a new vehicle, it is important to keep a level head and carry out a number of checks to make sure that the vehicle meets needs and requirements, and that there are no obvious technical faults."
