British motorists are risking having their car insurance premiums increased by adopting a "racing driver" frame of mind when sat behind the wheel.
According to a recent study conducted by insurance provider, Aviva, British motorists experience a change in personality once their engine is switched on.
The investigation found that out of 4,000 participants, 16 per cent of Brits admitted to feeling the urge to disregard speed limits and overtake other motorists in built-up areas once behind the wheel.
A third of drivers admitted to driving faster as a bid to impress others, while a quarter stated that they drive whilst taking a call on their mobile phones.
Furthermore, the research also revealed that the chance of a male driver jumping a red light was 50 per cent more likely compared to a female driver, while young drivers aged between 17 and 21 were more likely to take risks.
Adam Cracknell, spokesperson for Aviva said: "It's important that motorists are honest with themselves about how they really behave when driving.
Simple tips like not driving too close to the car in front of you, being courteous in busy traffic and indicating clearly can all help to remove the stress from driving and can help prevent both over aggression and over cautiousness on the roads."
