TOP TIPS ON LOWERING YOUR CAR INSURANCE

Below are ten top tips on how to lower your car insurance:

  • Restrict the number of drivers on your policy – This is especially important for those who are under the age of 25. Insurers always price their premium according to the youngest driver, or the one who has the least experience.
  • Security – If you have access to a garage then use it. Insurers look at the risk involved when pricing a car. So by locking your car in a garage overnight rather than on the street could save you 5%.
  • Limit your annual mileage – Try to decrease your yearly mileage rate to the very minimum. The AA claims that a driver can save up to 5% for 6,000 miles and 2.5% for 8,000 miles.
  • Buy a smaller, older car – This may not hold the same street credit as a top of the range brand new model, so you will not be saving your reputation, but you will be saving money, as an older model will take pounds off your insurance.
  • Accept higher excess – Most policies include a compulsory and/ or voluntary excess. If you are prepared to increase this slightly, then you can reduce your premium.
  • Pay in full at the outset – Paying by a direct debit always works out to be more expensive, so pay in full instead.
  • No imported cars – Try to steer clear of imported cars. If you do purchase one, then expect to pay a high price, as insurers will increase your premium.
  • Do not modify – Very commonly, (but not always) modifications made to a car such as supercharging the engine will force your insurance premium up.
  • Install a car alarm – By installing a car alarm, you could save 8%, depending on which type of alarm you use. The AA suggests that an industry-approved alarm is the best.
  • Correctly value your car – By over or under valuing your car you can affect your premium rate.

OTHER IMPORTANT FACTS

There are also ways, as a driver, where you can help to lower your car insurance price. It may sound obvious but by being a careful driver is the best way to help lower your premium. The less accidents you have, the less of a risk you present to the insurers.

Also the fewer times you get a speeding ticket shows what type of driver you are, so be careful and you could lower the insurance. If you are a man, then adding a woman to your car insurance policy may help to reduce the rate.

Get your job right. If you have two jobs, then make sure you tell the insurer about the job you are at the most, as your occupation can greatly affect your premium. There are even ways to reduce your premium according to how you fill out the policy.

Be as accurate as possible, the slightest mistake such as an overestimate in your mileage can increase the premium.

Be honest. This may not save you money, but it will stop you from being blacklisted by car insurance companies in the future. By lowering your car insurance premium and being a careful driver, you are setting the wheels in motion to drive your way to a good deal.
